{"id":476,"date":"2025-01-01T15:02:02","date_gmt":"2025-01-01T13:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crazy-memorys.ch\/IfixedIT\/?p=476"},"modified":"2026-02-01T18:49:37","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T16:49:37","slug":"hexos-work-in-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crazy-memorys.ch\/IfixedIT\/?p=476","title":{"rendered":"HexOS (Work in progress)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;ve never used TrueNAS before and dived to many times into it to fix HexOS bugs, but it&#8217;s Beta software so I wont complain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what I use (a bunch of old Hardware laying around) and it&#8217;s probably not the smartest config.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Corsair 500 W PSU (too much, but cheap)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ASUS PRIME B450M-A II (mATX) (Fine!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AMD Ryzen 3 2200G (no GPU required)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2x 8 GB G.Skill Aegis (no OC for stability)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Noname Realtek RTL8125 2.5 Gb Ethernet Card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Akyga AK35BK case (screwing things in sucks but the rest is fine for the price)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A boot SSD (on the back) and two WD Red Pro 4TB 3.5&#8243; (bottom and front) for the pool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No extra case fans. I have two open PCI-E slot covers (from a GPU) where fresh air comes in and exhausts through the PSU on top. CPU and HDD temps are (idle) between 30-40\u00b0 C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BIOS Settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I would recommend these options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Boot \u2192 Secure Boot \u2192 OS Type [Other OS) to disable it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advanced \u2192 CPU Configuration \u2192 SVM Mode [Enabled] for Virtualization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advanced \u2192 APM Configuration \u2192 Power On By PCI-E [Enabled] for Wake on LAN<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boot \u2192 Boot Configuration \u2192 Wait for F1 if Error [Disabled] because missing Keyboard\/GPU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shutdown and Wake on LAN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I live in a place with high power cost and turning it off when I&#8217;m not at home or sleeping makes sense. I know the drives don&#8217;t like that but If one fails, thats what the second is for, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shutdown<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Setup a CRON Job with the command:<br><kbd>\/sbin\/shutdown -P<\/kbd><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wake on LAN<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Search the name of your network adapter on the HexOS Dashboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go into System &#8211;&gt; Shell<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give yourself admin rights with: <br><kbd>sudo -i<\/kbd><br>Then paste your truenas_admin passwort with<kbd> CTRL+Shift+V<\/kbd><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activate Wake on LAN on your Network device with:<br><kbd>ethtool -s [adaptername] wol g<\/kbd><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check with <br><kbd>ethtool [adaptername]<\/kbd><br>if Wake-on is g<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More ideas<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your NAS should now react to Magic Packets but it might &#8222;forgets&#8220; this setting, so someone suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.truenas.com\/t\/server-wake-on-lan\/3227\/7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Init\/Shutdown Scripts<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good tool on Windows to send wake ups is NirSoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/utils\/wake_on_lan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WakeMeOnLAN<\/a> commands<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Power saving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, move the System Data Set to the boot-drive (System &#8211;> Advanced Settings &#8211;> Storage &#8211;> Configure). Else, every few minutes, something would be written on the HDD&#8217;s and they wouldn&#8217;t go into standby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now the 25.10 problem: They removed S.M.A.R.T settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe this can help: <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ngandrass\/truenas-spindown-timer\">https:\/\/github.com\/ngandrass\/truenas-spindown-timer<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some thing to explore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can I use my boot SSD for other things? Its too large just for a bit of NAS software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One power saving solution was to disable SMART and run it on startup with a script<br>Do the device names change on every startup?!
